Good bye
Summer Seminar
What an amazing week. I came to summer seminar to attend
“Coins in the Classroom” I began my week knowing
absolutely
nothing about coins other than they were great to spend. By
the
end of the week, I had learned SOOOOO
much. Unbelievable! I
learned about dies, cents, planchets, coin collecting, presidential
dollars, foreign cons, ancients, when to clean and when to
NOT
clean coins, polymer dollars, indian heads, bartering, hyper-inflation,
the coins from the movie The 300, what a Red Book is and how to use
it. And so much more……..
I took a field trip to a coin store and made my very first purchase of
Coins for My Classroom.
I learned and I learned and I
learned…………….
However, the week was not all about learning. It was also
about
connecting with the world of Numismatics and all of the wonderful
people involved. I met world famous authors, I met a museum
curator, I met a wonderful couple that introduced me to tax tokens, I
met fellow educators, and I met a whole new world of people dedicated
to their interest.
What amazed me the most was how generous everyone was; everyone shared
their knowledge, their enthusiasm and their
friendship. Collectors
allowed me to explore their precious coins and took the time to
patiently explain to me what I was holding.
Summer Seminar ended with a banquet. As with everything during the
week, the banquet was held in style. It gave us a chance to trade in
our jeans for dresses, our water bottles for a glass of wine and chance
to mingle with all of the attendees. Dinner was wonderful.
Then
came the awards and recognitions. We were able to applaud
interns, outstanding instructors, retiring ANA members and the
recipient of an honorary PhD.
But all too soon it came to end and it was time to board the van for
the short trip to the airport.
THANK
YOU GHCC, THANK YOU GHCC, THANK YOU.
Your scholarship provided an opportunity I would have never been able
to experience. I am so excited about getting teachers and students
involved with Coins in the Classroom.
Good
bye to Summer Seminar …….. Hello to the
Numismatic World.
