By the time you are reading this I will have returned from setting up at a
regional Book and Paper Collectors show in the Dallas Metroplex.
For the last seventeen years I have taken some merchandise to a show or some
years two or three shows a year. I
do this for several reasons. First,
I go as an escape. Few at these
shows know what I do for a living, nor do they particularly care.
Secondly, I enjoy the “fellowship” of like minded collectors and dealers. There
are some interesting conversations to be found.
Thirdly, I can dispense with some duplicate material or some items I have little
interest in any longer. I’d like
to say I make a little extra hobby speaking money, but I cannot.
Whatever money comes home with me, usually not a profit, winds up in the family
budget. For your information: my
stock is basically books related to
I’m bringing this part of my life up because I really do appreciate the opportunity to do the shows. These do refresh me in a unique way. The show I just attended is comfortable because of all the pre-work that goes into it. All I have to do is unload a bunch of books, and set up according to specific categories.
The show that I speak of here in retrospect is run totally by volunteers. It is sponsored by the “North Texas Booksellers Association.” Their commitment is to be sure my every need and the needs of my fellow dealers will be met and even surpassed. It is interesting to note that many who sell at the show also physically help set up the show. It is good to see it all work from the table side. This year I went as a non-association member. Next year will be different. They’ll have my check, if they don’t already, and I’ll be a card carrying member.
As you know the Greater Houston Coin Club sponsors a marvelous coin show each
year. Dealers from all over and
consumers as well will be present. It
does take a lot of work, but the work is worth the effort.
The vast majority of funds for our club’s operation come from this January
show. We wouldn’t be able to do
what we do in education without the show.
Incidentally, Occasionally, I hear from dealers who praise our Money Show of
the Southwest. I came across more
than a few in
Here is the bottom line: The Money Show of the Southwest is closer than you realize. It is just three months away. How about donating some time on January 19th, the Thursday before the show opens its doors to the public. Take time to be around during the show, on January 20th, 21st and 22nd. Volunteers are needed in many areas throughout the course of the event. Club member dealers are encouraged to volunteer prior to their own set up. It takes the effort of all of us to make it work well.
I have cleared my calendar and will make extra sure that this year that I’ll be
present and involved. I look
forward to being with you then and, of course, before at our Greater
