.

“Coins in the Classroom” is an innovative course designed specially to expose middle and high school teachers to the use of coins to augment their standardized curriculum in social studies, mathematics, World and American history or related disciplines (even Latin!)  The course consists of presentations, interactive discussions and workshops directed toward understanding how coins from ancient civilizations, Europe, Asia, the Americas and/or the United States can be used to help young minds learn and grow.

Participants have the opportunity to interact with fellow students from all over the United States.  The ANA works with participating teachers to secure continuing education as well as doctorial credits for their local districts.  No prior experience with coin collecting is necessary.  Teachers return to their classrooms with a suitcase full of hands-on tools for their students!  Based on the comments on the back of this flyer, most attendees have found their experience intellectually and socially rewarding!

The greater Houston area is defined as Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery and Waller counties.

The GHCC scholarships pay for transportation, tuition, room, board, class materials and for teaching aids to be used when teachers return to their classrooms.

To be considered, applications must be received by May1, 2008.

For scholarship criteria and applications, or for information on the Greater Houston Coin Club, please call 281-586-9727 or e-mail texascoins@comcast.net.  The GHCC can also be reached at P.O. Box 2963, Houston, TX 77252.
